FIRST GRADE AWARDS
Mrs. Chavez and Ms. Kirk-Warner have three award ceremony/performances in first grade. The dates are tentatively set for December 13, March 8, and May 31. They are all from 1:00 - 2:05. We hope that everyone will attend all 3 ceremonies because we sing several songs for you and then the awards are given. There are 3 different awards that your child can earn.
1. Bulls Eye Award (sight word reading memorization 250 words)
We expect all students to earn this award which is a grade level expectation. This is awarded one time in either December, March, or May depending on your child's speed of memorization.
2. On Target Award (sight word spelling 60 words)
Students work all year to earn the On Target Sight Word Spelling Award. We have compiled a list of 60 "No Excuse" words that students must spell correctly when writing. We focus on 30 each semester and do 2 words each week for homework, so by the end of the year, all students should be "on target" for second grade.
3. Star Award (math fact + and - memorization timed test)
This is only given at the final awards ceremony in May. We learn and practice these facts all year long in class and for homework. In May, after all facts have been learned, your child will have 3 chances to pass several versions of timed, math fact tests. They should be able to complete 40 problems in 4 minutes with out counting on their fingers. Click on the math facts tab on the left to see the strategies and order of all the facts.
