One of the common core first grade math standards is to commit to memory the addition and subtraction facts with answers up to 10. Using flash cards is a great way to practice your facts with your family. We learn the facts in groups and have a strategy to do each group. The facts need to be memorized. We do not want the students to count on their fingers or draw marks on their papers to count.
This is the order that we learn the addition facts:
The Doubles (0+0, 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5)
Plus 1's (1+0, 1+2, 1+3, 1+4, 1+5, 1+6, 1+7, 1+8, 1+9)
Plus 0's (0+2, 0+3, 0+4, 0+5, 0+6, 0+7, 0+8, 0+9, 0+10)
Plus 2's (even and odd ---- 4+2, 6+2, 8+2 and 3+2, 5+2, 7+2)
